The work of being a “Lawyer-Translator”

Being bilingual is not enough in order to work as a lawyer-translator. A lawyer-translator has to know technical terms and control the legal system that may be involved in every official document. They may translate court opinions, contracts, court judgments, court proceedings, legal work products, legal articles.

Comparing with an interpreter, who is a liaison between two parties, they do not need to write and less to be an expert in the subject. Translators must have skills of fast thinking and knowledge about spelling and grammar in both languages. However, when it is a legal document, the transcription must be more accurate in order to avoid mistakes that can cause complex legal process.

The most important aspect is linked with legal terminology and each country has its own legal system. A lawyer-translator has to be familiar with all national and international legal systems and its respective legal slangs, as well as show passion for languages.

A lawyer-translator has to deal with words that depend on the structure of a sentence, it would have different meanings. They have to learn to manage legal terminology, as well as legal structures and tight deadlines.

In Lawlinguists, the translation is delivered on or before the deadline. We are a family of lawyers with more than 1000 lawyer-translators, who already knew the difficulties of legal translations.
